The Burden Of Mortality
June 17, 2019
These old bones are getting really tired
that’s the burden of mortality
I’ve seen a lot of searching for happiness
I’ve seen a lot of ego justification
I’ve endured a lot mistakes done to me by others
done to others by me
I’ve forgiven almost everything over and over
I’ve had to forget the worst
that’s the burden of mortality.
I’ve been curious about what is beautiful and good
I’ve meditated through what’s ugly and bad
I’ve given of myself even more
and these old bones are getting really tired
That’s the burden of mortality
I’ve lived my life as myself
lived in it more fully than most
I’ve appreciated how unique I am while I looked just like everyone else
I’ve felt too much with a heart that won’t quit
Love is bigger than how tired you get
that’s the burden of mortality.
I’ve sang my songs and written my stories
I dared to dream beyond all the opposites
I walked up every mountain to see the view
I’ve always searched for you
And as these old bones are getting really tired
I appreciate what I have been given
I appreciate the mystery of who I am
I came to break down all gender roles and rules
and to live free of them.
When these old bones are too tired will you be able to meet me, to recognize me?
That’s the burden of your mortality
And when your bones are old and tired too
give me your burden, we will share your burden
our burden of mortality.
And when I am asked to come again
to come and give all I have
Will I hesitate to take on this burden once again
this burden of mortality?
